Standard runway-dependent airplanes have limited use in missions right now, mainly because most islands are too small for takeoff and landing, and missions take place at sea where there is no runway to land. As such, aircraft in Stormworks tend to be seaplanes.
Airplanes generate lift by using wings. More information on Wikipedia.
